Conclusion:
The amount of iron oxide that may be present in medicines as a dye can be as much as 2 mg per product. When used regularly by haemochromatosis patients, this can in extreme cases mean that three or four more blood-letting sessions a year are required. But the average iron oxide content of a medicine is much lower, and should not lead to any harmful effects. As a rule we can assume that medicines with an iron oxide content high enough to require two additional blood-letting sessions a year will have harmful effects on haemochromatosis patients. But until the situation is clarified, practitioners prescribing or supplying (long-term) medication to haemochromatosis patients should always give preference to white tablets or transparent capsules.
